BRICK Our History: Past , Present and to Come.

About 30 years ago a local group of mostly Catholic folks weekly gathered at a prayer meeting.  In its early days the group moved to having the prayer meetings at Sacred Heart of Dearborn.  Parents in this group wanted to have some sort of youth group available to their teens where they could be encouraged into making and keeping Jesus as the center of their lives plus growing in knowing and accepting their Catholic faith.  A youth group was formed.

Today this group is called BRICK.  Our title stands for Building Relationships in Christ Our King.  We currently meet from October – June on Monday nights from 7PM-9:15PM in the basement of the Sacred Heart Convent.  The format of our meeting is generally:  prayer with lots of music;  a teaching; announcements; small group discussions and fellowship/snack time at the end.   Our first semester generally covers talks that encourager teens to consider Jesus.  Over and over teens hear about having a change of heart; praying daily and participating fully in the Sacramental life of the church.  In the second semester we have talks that are more like apologetics.

As our name would indicate we are heavily involved in building solid relationships between teens.  Some events in which we yearly participate and which help us build these relationships are a retreat, a camping trip and attendance at the Franciscan University of Steubenville High School summer conference.   Weekly small groups help to keep us in touch with each other’s lives and to share our need for prayer and support.

On the horizon.   In this past year our Music Ministry has flourished.  We had four separate music teams leading us weekly in Praise and Worship.   I believe this trend will continue to bloom as more and more teens are learning to play guitar and sing songs that draw our hearts nearer to God.   In this past year BRICK has initiated a ProLife club.

They are off to a slow but steady start.   They are already a light on a bushel basket to a world darkened by the culture of death.    At the Steubenville conference many of the teens from our group stood up when the question was raised: “Do you feel as though God is calling you to a vocation as a priest or religious?”   Pray for their discernment.

Oh Lord, let the fruit of BRICK continue to be evident as we are planted, watered and nurtured by you and your Church.
